Should be a good time, going with a friend from college for both days in Ohio - June 30th/July 1st as spectators.

In other news, despite having long intended to wait until I had most/all of the parts and having very little free time in the next month due to work travel, I’ve decided that the chevelle’s transmission swap will begin tomorrow after work.

I maintain that the hardest part is going to be getting the powerglide out - it’s been in there for quite a while (46 years). Then all that’s left will be everything.

If over half of the time between next week and the event wasn’t going to consist of me traveling for work, I’d be scrambling to get it in on time for sure! As it is, there’s no chance, so I’ll take my time and do it right. The car isn’t exactly quick (or showable) either as it is.

Spot on, the only hiccup getting it installed in place of the powerglide is the passenger’s side speedo hookup, which just means I need a new cable.

that speedo might just surprise you, and reach. you manage to get the pedals, linkages, and swingarms? does the header on the drivers’ side look like it is going to clear the pivot? does your glide have the same output spline count as the muncie? ........ just asking dumb questions i MIGHT already know the answers to.....

I don’t have the parts for the linkage or pedals yet, the header sure looks like it should clear (they’re shorties), my notes from researching it a long time ago include reusing the slip yoke so the splines should probably match up.

thats good, i know that there are at least two versions of the ‘glide, and the older one had a coarse output shaft(fewer splines) it was produced in the early 60s. sometimes they manage to get snuck into slightly later cars as they get replaced over time. sounds like you have a decent handle on things though......

YES, thats about the only way i can tell them apart fairly reliably. that and the shift fork nuts. so many of them have had cases swapped, and at least the guts stay the same.

So many have broken off “ears”. You’d think the case was made of Laffy Taffy.
That and the countershaft hole wears leading to an annoying leak.

i have had SO MANY guys that i know ask me if i were interested in a chevy 4 speed, and when i bite, and go look at it, they look like you said, where the ears are broken off, or look like they have gotten drug behind a truck for a few miles. i used to know a guy that would weld aluminum for not much. i took him more than a few cases missing ears. every so often i get lucky, and the guy still has the broken ears. every so often i can still get lucky enough to get my hands on one for around $400......

Last one I built had a Supercase and an iron midplate. I’m done with aluminum Muncie cases. LOL.

those supercase, are worth their weight in something real valuable. thats one of those spend the money once, and never look back, and have peace of mind that it will be there.......

That would be excellent if I knew what the drive gear in the trans was :)
I’m either going to figure something out soon-ish or just see what the error is when I get it all together and go from there.

You can kind of guess. Get the casting number off of the trans, figure out what year range it was for, and then figure it’s the common drive gear for that setup. Driven gears are cheap.

The numbers on this case suggest its an M21 but it’s got M20 gears in it :)

yeah, its hard to tell them apart solely on any one thing. the case stampings are nice, but over the years a lot of cases have gotten new guts put back into them. i have been over to guys’ houses that run in dirt track, and seen stacks of old cases laying around, waiting for enough guts to be put back together, or awaiting the case in the car to get hurt..... but it sure is nice to have one of these in the car. for a nice “heavy” car like yours, it will love the wide spread in the gears......

When I picked it up in November, I looked in to it. The numbers on the case suggest an M21 but the gears in it are M20 gears, so all bets are off there. I might see if I can make any sort of observation with the driven gear removed.
